Structure Of Sydney Harbour Bridge
The arch of the bridge spans over around 1,654 ft and its summit is at 440 ft above the mean sea level. The heights of its trusses range from 59 ft at the centre to 187 ft at the ends adjacent to the pylons. The bridge is held together by six million hand driven rivets made in Australia. The weight of the largest of the rivets was 3.5 kg and their length was 39.5 cm.
Designed by the Scottish architect Thomas S. Tait, the pylons are made of granite. The pylons have no structural purpose but the abutments at their bases provide crucial support to the loads from the arch. The pylon at the south eastern side consists of a museum and a tourist centre. It provides a 360 degrees view of the city and the harbour at the top.
